Being shallow makes you a slave
I don’t know what makes a person shallow, whether it’s something that people are born with or something that’s nurtured. It could be a bit of both. What I do know is that being shallow or too shallow is a form of self-inflicted slavery.
People need to keep up with the Jones and feel superior to others by flashing what they have, which keeps them locked in a lifestyle like a slave. They’re forced to do things they hate and humiliate themselves to keep up this lifestyle.
They are their own slavemaster and they are cracking the whip on themselves for their shallow pursuits. You can see this as an outsider as they may try to get you to live the same way or judge you for not being like them.
The shallow lifestyle doesn’t look fun. It looks desperate, especially as you get older. People like this can’t do certain things, they can’t like certain things, and they can’t spend time with certain people. Their life has to look glamorous and better than everyone else as that’s what they value the most.
This is why you see all these shallow-driven people talk about growth as if all growth is for them to have more money and status. There is no personal growth anywhere to be seen.
I think a positive realisation that I’ve come to over the last few months is that I’m not a slave to shallowness or money…
