Being Working-Class In a Middle-Class Working World
I quit my first office job because I hated being on the phone and I hated the environment I was in. I hated the fake family bullshit, the completely unnecessary backstabbing, and the fact I clearly didn’t fit in.
But me being me, I got back on the horse and have actually had many successes in the office. The one thing that I can’t do to this day though is build a relationship with my middle-class white colleagues.
I come from a poor background. I had a single second-generation Jamaican Mum, but I did grow up around a lot of white people as my town is very against diversity. This combination creates an odd person, to say the least, and you’d know this if you have read any of my other posts.
We Have Literally Nothing In Common
It’s hard to relate to these people as we way as well be from to different plants. The only thing we can maybe relate on is football if there’s a guy in the office, other than that nothing. I don’t know what it’s like to go to uni, or go travelling after uni, or buy a house in my early 20s.
I don’t relate to that lifestyle, or know where they get all of this money from. It seems like they can just shit out 2 grand whenever they want to buy something or go somewhere.
