Do we need to stop telling people to think about themselves?

We’re told to take a step back from life and reflect more often so we can see how things truly make us feel, and a lot more people are taking on this practice. I think it’s a good thing as when you track and monitor your life you become more self-aware and can make adjustments to your life that make it better.

I do this when I hike, sometimes in the car, at times at home, and I go for the occasional walk. I also do this when I write and it’s one of the most helpful things I’ve ever done.

But as good as this is, I think that it can be a bad thing too. Too much self-reflection without action and outside feedback can be a dangerous combination. Don’t forget the fact that people look at things differently whilst they’re reflecting on a situation as well.

Not everyone is able to be objective and some people are too dangerous to be allowed to think unsupervised.

Narcissistic reflections

Not everyone reflects with good intentions. It’s very clear when you speak to people who is trying to gain a better understanding of themselves and a situation, and who is trying to justify why they’re always right.

It’s something I’m sure we’ve all done. We always want to be right in every situation but part of reflection…
