How can you love a country that racially abused you?
Growing up I’ve never felt connected to the UK, and part of the reason is because I’ve been racially abused and told that I’m not from here despite being born here. Being black means that you can be born somewhere and still get told you’re a guest. This could be from white people whose family hasn’t been here long as well.
People say to POC that we should leave if we don’t like it here and we don’t feel welcome. There is a long list of problems with that sentiment. Number 1 is that we can’t just up and leave as we’d need money to do that, and with all the oppression we can’t get high enough paying jobs to save and leave.
Numer 2 is that we try to like it in our countries, but the oppressors do all they can to stop us. Racism is one of the highest forms of stupidity out there, so as you can expect most people are racist and the fight to enjoy living in your own country will never stop.
Being resilient to something is one thing, but liking it is another.
*I lowkey hope England never wins at sports. I try to support them but I don’t think the country deserves success. That says it all.
