How nepotism makes companies impossible to work for
When we’re young we dream of working with our best friends and family. Imagine how much fun it would be to work with the people you love instead of a creepy stranger. Work wouldn’t feel like work.
Many companies hire friends and family but it’s not all sunflowers and roses, in fact, it’s unenjoyable for everyone, especially for the people that aren’t part of the group.
This is why “family-owned business” is seen as a red flag by many.
It breeds entitlement
The people who only got the job because of their family and friends aren’t going to have the same mentality as the people who didn’t.
Think about it, one group of people worked their asses off for years and suffered for what they have. Whilst the other got the job because someone thinks they’re a good lad or because their cousin they speak to every now and then works there.
The people that worked hard to get where they are will probably be the more talented members of staff. But the boss’s friends will more likely have been at the company for longer meaning that they will feel entitled to first pick for new roles even though they’re mediocre.
