I suffer from anxiety — when it’s convenient
Anxiety is a word that I used to never hear as a kid. Then I started researching human behaviour to better understand others and myself and became familiar with the term. It explained so much about why I felt the way I did at certain times.
Then a few years later I began to hear other people using the word and it started to become more mainstream. I thought this was cool as it is something important for the average person to know about, and people could find comfort in that other people could relate.
Apparently, an entire generation of kids used the internet in private to better understand themselves just as I did. Their parent dismissive theories weren’t enough for them either.
But now anxiety has become popular. It’s become so popular that people are making it their personality and they’re using it as a way to get ahead in life. Or at least to out of doing things that they don’t want to do. Anxiety for many is a get-out-of-jail-free card, and I’ve now grown to resent the word and the people who claim to have it.
