Is it actually possible to truly be yourself?

“Be yourself.”

“Don’t worry about what anyone else says.”

“Just do you.”

These are things that I hear all the time, and whilst they sound good in theory, they’re hard to pull off in practice. If it was that easy for people to be themselves then everyone would be doing it.

The truth is that being yourself comes with consequences, consequences that not everyone is prepared to suffer through. Living a good life means being tactical at times and going “undercover”.

People will come after you

You can be yourself but that doesn’t mean that everyone will like or respect who you are. That’s fine if you don’t have to deal with these people any longer but some people will go out of their way to hurt you.

For example, I’ve got people coming for my job at work. I be myself and mind my own business, but they don’t like me and for that I must pay apparently.

There’s nothing I can do, it’s out of my hands. They’re making the decision to try and destroy me and I have to deal with whatever comes with that.

If I was to try and get them to like me I wouldn’t be being myself as I can’t stand these assholes.
