The truth behind making your career your entire personality
As a career-motivated person, there was a time when I was faced with a question that defined the rest of my life.
“Should I put everything into my career?”
Should I go to all the events? Should I spend most of my time working? Should I adjust my personality to one that would go far in the business world? Should I make my career my everything?
In the end, I decided not to as it’s just not me. I’m not gonna lie and say I didn’t briefly give it a test run. I couldn’t do it, and I’m glad I did that as I’ve seen the horrible truth behind this way of life.
No one I’ve met who made their career their entire personality seems happy, they seem dead inside and disconnected from the real world. Underneath that, I don’t know what’s there and I don’t want to see it.
What does it mean to make your career your entire personality?
It means your career comes first ahead of everything. It means that everything you do outside of work revolves around your career. It means sacrificing certain things to further yourself at work and not becoming a rounded person.
