They think I’m good at my job, but it’s just that everyone else is mediocre
The older you get the more experience you gain, and with that comes a change in perception of you and your abilities. When I was younger people thought I was useless in white-collar jobs, and that’s because I was for the most part.
Don’t get me wrong I wasn’t completely incompetent but I did make a lot of mistakes, more than most others. It didn’t help that I was often put down and mocked by my own managers and people on my team. Growing up in the South of England, people are abusive to you if you stick out at work so you better not make a mistake or they’ll feel justified in their actions.
Now with 10 years of work experience, I am looked at the completely opposite way, and that’s because I’ve worked very hard to become competent. People see it now and I’m more confident in my own abilities with much higher self-esteem. If people try and tear me down I don’t let it get to me and I can see where it’s coming from…
