What are people in Birmingham, UK, like?

6 min readMay 11, 2025

So I have been living in Birmingham, UK, for over a year, and I wanted to write about it. It’s a city that has a lot of misconceptions about it, even by people who live nearby. In this post in particular, I wanted to focus on the people.

I bet if you ask people around the UK, “What are Brummies like?” they’d find it hard to answer the question. Even after living here for a year, I still find it hard to define them.

In future, I want to write more about what it’s like to live in the UK as someone who’s from here. You see a lot of content from people from other countries who moved here, and content from people from here with an agenda.

How much good content do you have from people from this country with no agenda? I can’t think of 1 off the top of my head. I’m not trying to sell anything or create a narrative, I just want to document my experience.

What are Brummies like?

Brummies come across as quite reserved and passive. For a while I didn’t think this city had a personality, but that is the personality. They’re not charismatic or charming people, but they are friendly for the most part, once you start speaking to them. From a distance, they don’t come off as friendly, but you have to initiate the conversation, and they’re always so nice.
