What does a lack of inclusion in the workplace really look like?

It’s not good enough to have certain types of people in your workplace, that’s not real inclusion. It’s almost inclusion, it’s a good start, but there is still a lot to do, and it has to be done consistently.

Not listening to certain types of people

Companies love to say they listen to all employees when there aren’t many that do. The only ones that do are forced to as they’re small companies, and even then it’s not guaranteed.

The higher-ups normally have their go-to people for information and are hesitant to listen to anyone else. It’s normally people they like more than everyone else and yes men.

They may give others the chance to speak, but they’re not listening, and they’re going to quickly dismiss what was said due to who it came from. They’re not just like they are so they’re not listening.

Hyper focusing on those that are different

It may seem inclusive to focus on those that are different, but it may give the opposite results because you’re not treating them like everyone else.

You’re also singling those people out and making others hyper-focused on them as well. People are now watching and judging their every move and…
