What is it like to work in Birmingham, UK/the Midlands?

5 min readMay 18, 2025

I would write about what it’s like to work in Birmingham alone, but I’ve only had 2 short jobs in the city. Most of my employment since living here has been outside the city. It’s quite frustrating as I came here to get away from the places on the outskirts of the city which are narrow minded, soulless shitholes.

As you know, if you’ve been following me I’ve had pretty shit luck when it comes to employment for my entire 12+ years working. It’s been so bad that I’ve created a series called “Toxic workplace stories” that’s been pretty successful. My family are even amazed at some of my experiences.

Working in the Midlands, in short, has been very Midlands. What I mean by that is that it’s dumb, and I’ve come to learn that dumb describes a lot of people in the Midlands. I’m not saying this out of anger or frustration, it’s just abundantly clear that people around this part of the country aren’t very smart.

People in the Midlands are dumb

No offence, but this is the best way I can describe it here. It’s not a beacon of intelligence, and there is no reason for it to be. People only live here because the other parts of the country have rejected them. Even I, who likes Birmingham, am in that boat. If I could live in Manchester, Bristol, London, or Cheltenham…
