Why do people with money pretend to be poor?

This is something that’s always bothered me, and I think it’s something to do with a lack of financial literacy among other things. I think people are confusing being a poor high earner with actually being poor.

They have good jobs, nice homes, and go out all the time. I think it’s fair to say it’s not a poor persons lifestyle. But they’ll complain that life is unaffordable and everything is falling apart. It’s most likely because they’re in debt.

You can’t speak to these people either. They think that you telling them to take responsibility for for their finances is the equivalent of calling them a slur or something.

Avoiding responsibility for their finances

If you tell someone who’s bad with their money that their finances are mostly down to their own behaviour, then they’re going to have a fit most of the time. No one wants to be told that their problems are their fault, especially when it comes to money.

People will point to everything except themselves, even unknown people in the 1%. Yeah, it’s the 1% fault that you spent £100 alone on takeaway this month. It’s the governments fault that you buy meal prep instead of cooking food for yourself.
