I used to hate motivational speakers, and I still think a lot of them are annoying. But as I get older and face more challenges I can see why they’ve got a place in society. It’s gotten to the point where I look for motivational words a lot, and I see successful people do it all the time.

It’s because you need someone who relates (or sounds like they relate) to what you’re going through to tell you to keep going sometimes. The people who’re around you might not be enough, and sometimes they may be the ones dragging you down. So you need to look to people who’ve been there and done it.

Your mum telling you that you’re great isn’t the same as David Goggins screaming at you.

Picking your motivation

Before you go out there and start taking inspiration from random people, you need to know who you’re listening to. I take motivation from people I follow and respect as well as things like Stoicism.

You have to be careful as there are sociopath marketers who’re trying to convince you to pay a premium to go to one of their speaking events.

I am not a stoic, there are too many rules. But I think there is a lot to be learned from Stoicism. It helps you accept the harsh realities of life and it motivates you to keep going whilst telling you that…
