Word-of-mouth recommendations are terrible
When I get a word-of-mouth recommendation I always take it with a pinch of salt. It’s not to say that I know better or don’t respect the other person, it’s just that most people don’t know what they’re talking about. It’s a harsh reality that even I in all my wisdom have had to accept.
People will passionately tell you to do something because they have done it (allegedly) or because they’ve seen someone else do it. Or even worse, because they’ve heard someone else say it in passing (yes, this does happen).
When you get advice it’s best to look into it yourself and take it from there. The bullshit that you’ve been told might lead you to something worthwhile.
No one truly understands what you want
No one other than you can truly understand what you want, so recommendations from other people aren’t going to hit the mark most of the time. If you’ve got good people around you who truly care about you and pay attention, then maybe you’ll have a higher chance, but the average random on the street has no chance.
You might be wondering why I mentioned randoms giving advice but I mentioned them because people you don’t know still seem to think their opinion on something will matter in your life.
