Working for a small family-owned business is a massive nightmare

I survived. I worked for a small family-owned business and lived to tell the tale. I didn’t last long, but I lasted a lot longer than I thought I would and I came out unscathed which is the most important thing.

Here is my tragic story.

How I got the job

I got contacted out of the blue because apparently, I applied for this job a few weeks beforehand. I didn’t remember applying for it, and I couldn’t find the application or the job advert anywhere. So essentially to this day, I have no idea how they found me.

I only apply for jobs on Indeed and Reed, and if you apply for a job on one of these platforms they keep a record of it.

Did I know what to expect coming in?

I did know what to expect from a small family-owned business but this company seemed different. They said the right things in the interview and seemed to have their heads on straight. They really seemed to emphasise what it means to be a good company and what it takes to have a good company culture.

Since then I’ve learned that companies that emphasise having a good company culture and employee wellbeing tend to be the worst for things like that. I didn’t…
